When preparing a costume for a fancy dress party, many of us fall into the trap of being distracted by the bigger picture. Of course the main body of the costume is important – a pirate would look pretty silly without the obligatory stripy trousers – but as with everything in life, it is the small details that really make the difference. Every princess needs a tiara and a Genie would be nothing without a lamp.
One such accessory that is often forgotten is a pair gloves. Perhaps it is because we now live in a time where gloves are only worn in winter months or during medical procedures, but when carefully crafting your costume it is worth remembering that a pair of fancy dress costume gloves could really give your outfit that edge.
For costumes based on the fashions of days gone by, gloves are crucial. Ladies dressing in Victorian fashions should opt for an elegant pair with small buttoned details, whilst those opting for a fun fifties costume should invest in pure white wrist gloves. A pair of white elbow length formal gloves will also complete any Hollywood starlet look and every Madonna needs some oh-so-eighties black lace costume gloves.
Gloves are not just for the ladies, however. Michael Jackson look-alikes need that one white glove and any good Mickey Mouse requires a pair of white fancy dress gloves. Gents recreating any pre-war look should also invest in a pair of formal gloves, as they will be the perfect complement to that top hat!
