Shoe-spats or previously known as spatterdash were worn by men in the 1900s to protect their shoes and ankles from mud, they then became a well-known fashion accessory associated with gangsters and well-dressed men. Grey shoe-spats were a worn by gangsters and made them easy identifiable in the 1920s.
